I like to think about weddings in the grand scheme of things. Without a doubt, there are millions of amazing, touching and important aspects to weddings, and making yours the most special and memorable day that you can. I believe in those things, which is why I enjoy photographing them so much.
I also believe that it is important to keep in mind that there are other things going on in the world, even on your wedding day. This helps to keep things real, and true, elevating to the forefront what is important about your wedding.
We don't often see the contrast of some peoples' harsh realities on wedding days. That is part of the dream of perfection. So when you do see a bride and groom's day being suddenly, catastrophically ruined, it's startling. It's not * supposed * to happen. (But really, when IS IT supposed to happen?)
I was shocked and moved by these images that I saw on
Jessamyn Harris's blog. She found these wedding photos in a Daily Telegraph
article that were taken in China on the day of the earthquake. The couple were having their portraits taken, when suddenly…
These photos help me feel a deeper compassion for the horrific experience of what this earthquake might have been like. Seeing it through a wedding, the "best day of your life", just helps illustrate the extremity of the contradiction.
My heart goes out to those who suffered, and continue to suffer.
When Sarah and I first joked about doing her engagement shoot with Rob in Yorkville, I secretly knew it was going to be a great great location, I just didn’t know how great.
The Cherry Blossoms in the park/installation are in full bloom. Petals above your head and petals below your feet. It’s dreamy. Fantastical. And very romantic.
It suited this couple perfectly. Oh, and what a pleasure it was to photograph them. So easy-going, real, and very much in love.
I fear I will fill up my whole blog with this photo session. I just don’t want to edit any more out right now, I’m having a terrible time choosing. When it’s good, you just know. It’s good. And when your first date is great, you just know, more is to come. But the first date stays, always, great.
Bart and Emily are getting married in July. For their engagement shoot this weekend, we went to Centre Island, where they had their first date.
It’s like memory lane, heading forward.
So, this couple actually tried to convince me that they were going to be my “stiffest clients”. Have a look, you tell me. Does this couple look high maintenance and awkward? I think they are absolute naturals. * sigh *
We had a great time on this session, but mostly because Susie and Johnny were up for anything — even when Susie started sinking in the mud, and after her dog leaped up and put black paw marks across her white outfit. For me, those limitations led to thinking creatively, and hiding the “errors”. In some ways, I’m grateful!
Anyway, these two were were terrific. And if this is what “hard to work with” means, I’ll take it any day.
(Except dog jumping up on wedding dress. That wouldn’t be good. We’ll leave that one at home.)

I call this post Mighty Marty because she is a mix of a million talents that most people wish for. She sews, cooks, travels extensively, is extremely creative, writes music… you get the idea. But most of all, this girl has vocal chords and like no other, while playing guitar, piano and the ukulele.
We took some shots in a bowling alley for her upcoming album. Bowling was random enough of a location to make no sense, and therefore perfect sense, for the shoot.
I don’t want to say you heard of her here first, but if you did, consider yourselves lucky.
So here she is, this is Marty.
