documentographer photo blog

Hello, welcome!  I'm Catherine Farquharson.  I'm a professional photographer, using photography as a way to expand, connect and create.

For my clients and subjects, this means what we do is real, and fun.  I shoot creative editorial portraits for publications, sometimes of well-known names like Clare Danes and Sarah Slean.  I also work with emerging artists and people-of-note to-be, as we develop branding, image and feelings that photos can portray and evoke through their portraits.

As a documentarian, I tell photo-stories from all over the world, including the recent first interracial prom in Charleston, Mississippi, where my photos were published in Oprah's magazine, the National Post, NPR.com, Seventeen magazine and more.

I especially revel in covering important life experiences, including weddings, relationships, and natural lifestyle portraits.  Those moments and events are what we remember and hold onto, and I am honoured by the opportunity for my photos to be the touchstone for those memories and feelings.

For me, photography of people is the capturing of their essence, and sharing back what I saw and felt.  Wherever, and whomever they are. Everywhere and anywhere. Connecting, understanding and sharing.

Nominate someone for a photo session!

Happy Boxing day!

While everyone is running around for the best sale, let me remind you that this deal is actually FREE…

I'm offering my photo services to someone or some people that you think deserve it.  Who is coming to your mind right now?  Them!  Nominate them!  They would love it.

Here's the process:
1. Think of someone or some people you think should be photographed by me. Perhaps it's someone who would never buy this service for themselves. Perhaps they can't afford it, but would love it.
2. E-mail me and tell me why they should win.
3. Cross your fingers.
4. Check here New Year's Day for the winner.

It's that easy, and that awesome!

Best Boxing Day Sale ever.  Don't you think?

Dear reader,

With snowmageddon outside, and the solstice approaching,  it seems only fitting to take a moment to share a few thoughts.
I have officially been blogging on here for one year!  This lil typepad has allowed me to share my most exciting Documentographer year yet with you all.
Together (that's me and you), we covered 22 amazingly unique and special weddings, and we went to Peru, Mississippi, Kenya and Israel. We also met some fabulously fun families, and took portraits of people up to some very interesting things, including starting new businesses, books and projects.
In truth, you, dear client/reader/supporter, have meant that this year was possible for me. Thank you for believing in me, trusting me, and sharing with me.
I wish you the very very very best in this holiday season.
With love and gratitude,
catherine

Remember these angels from the summertime?

They're not sleepy babies anymore.  No siree.  They are squirmy, snuggly and so much fun.  I was delighted to be invited back to photograph these munchkins again.
Here they are, oh so innocent…

feeling the love, the easiest gift to give

Do you know someone who you feel should have awesome pictures taken, but can't afford it?
Doesn't everyone want a fun, natural portrait session with their loved ones?  I know it's not in everyone's budget, but I believe it should be in everyone's life anyway.
Well, here's our chance.

I am happy to say I am participating in a cool little grassroots project called Giving is Awesome, to get photo services to people who you think deserve to have them, but can't afford them.

Here's how it works.  I have donated my time and services.  If you know someone who you think should have a photo session taken with me, nominate them to win it.  Send me an e-mail (documentographer@gmail.com), tell me who they are, and why you think they should win.  And then watch the fruits of your generosity come to fruition.
I will announce the winner on New Year's Day.

Go team!

Being Meghan Telpner

Have you ever met someone and instantly coveted their life?  This happened to me yesterday when I met Meghan Telpner for our portrait shoot.  She co-ordinates her business and life like she co-ordinates her clothes with her live/work studio — perfectly!

I walked in, and immediately wanted to be her.

Think I'm crazy?  Listen to what she offers through her Nutrition and Holistic Lifestyle business. Cooking classes, kitchen cupboard clean-outs, meditation classes, dietary consultations and personal health programs, to name just a few. What can I say? I signed up. She's going to teach me how to grocery shop effectively.

I might have walked in wanting to be her, but I walked out looking forward to being me!  Thanks for the inspiration, Meghan.
